S 3 Strategies Skimming Scanning & Surveying |
|
Skimming |
Skimming means to look at the reading text quickly to get an idea of what the text is about. Look at keywords, the title, first sentences of paragraphs, and the conclusion. Then excellent readers decide if the information is what they need. |
Scanning |
Scanning means to look for specific information in a text. People usually scan to answer questions. Scanning is very useful when you want to find the answer to a question very quickly. |
Surveying |
Surveying means to look at a reading text in a strategic way. Readers look at the titles, subtitles, italicized or bold print words. They look at the pictures, graphs, tables and charts. Then excellent readers synthesize the information, make questions and predict what they will be reading about. |
