SQ3R

Survey Question Read Recall Review

SQ3R is a reading and learning strategy.  It was developed in 1946 by Francis Robinson.  There are many variations.  This variation includes strategies of good readers.  SQ3R is an excellent strategy to use for informational texts.  That means it is perfect for textbook and handout readings.

□Read the chapter title

□Read the sub titles,

□Read the bold face and italicized type.

□Read the chapter reviews

□Look at the pictures, captions, charts etc.

Q

Question & Predict

□Make questions before and during your reading.

□Make Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How questions.

□How does this fit in with things you already know?

□Predict the content and the outcomes.

Read

While you are reading… 

□Use active reading marks while reading

□Look for the answers to your questions.

□Be aware of your understanding.  Modify your reading speed if necessary. 

□Make predictions.  Check to see if your predictions were accurate.

□Think how this information relates to what you already know.

□Read paragraph by paragraph, section by section or chapter by chapter depending on the difficulty of the text and your reading level.

Recall / Recite

□Discuss the text with a classmate. 

□Look at your active reading notes.  Organize your notes, highlights, etcetera into an appropriate graphic organizer. 

□Recall and write down all important facts.  Organize this information into an appropriate graphic organizer.

Review

□Make connections

□Summarize the information. 

□connect this information with previously learned information.

□DECIDE WHAT INFORMATION YOU need more clarification on. 

□Decide which information needs clarification. 

□Search the text, your classmates or your teacher for those answers!
